Welcome to The Black Hills of South Dakota

The Black Hills of South Dakota is a forested mountain range that contains some of the most impressive peaks in the Eastern United States. The region has a rich history that has been shaped by the Native American tribes that once thrived here, the 19th century gold rush and the lumber industry. Today, the Black Hills are known primarily as a tourist destination, the place where visitors can feel their jaws drop in the presence of the amazing Mt. Rushmore. Rapid City South Dakota is the big city of the Black Hills; its population is about 70,000.

The visual impact of the Black Hills has enticed several movie production crews to use the area as a backdrop. National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Dances with Wolves and other classics capture the beauty of Black Hills for the silver screen.

Attractions in and around the Black Hills of South Dakota include Mt. Rushmore, Rapid City, the historic gambling town of Deadwood, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial. Deadwood, incidentally, is the inspiration for the television show with the same name; the show, however, is not actually filmed there.
